hr - Task timer App Reviews
This is a well-designed, compact, & clean time tracking app. I used Harvest at my last job, and this is really similar, but costs less than a single month’s subscription. I’m just discovering the hotkeys now, and am trying to speed up the process of tracking time. SOMEONE SHOULD MAKE AN ALFRED WORKFLOW FOR THIS APP!
This is a terrific app that is so simple to use - if you need to track your time on different projects this is the simplest to use Ive ever seen and absolutely the best. It allows for a nice grouping of tasks and projects, and lives in the menu bar, making it simple to start, stop, edit, and manually edit or add times. I dont want to add overhead and spend time tracking my time, because that costs me money. This app is so intuitive and seemless and easy to use that its just perfect. The best part is that the developer is so responsive, and continuing to improve the product without bloating it. This latest version is no exception. The devloper has specifically responded to feature requests in the support forum, and done in a thoughful way to support the widest range of workflows. The export features are great and simple to use. The database is also stored in sqlite3 in a very well-organized way, so for command-line junkies, its easy to script automated exports.
This is a handy little app so far. I am using it to track work that I do on contract, and it seems to be working well. I would like the ability to export while a task is being timed, however.
Now that TicToc is MIA, hr fills the void. Very nice update in placing the start button on the task itself. Perhaps this can be applied to the main project list too, and that it starts the last created task inside.
This does what it says and well. Easy to use and reliable. The recent addition of the start button on the task is a welcomed improvement as it cuts down the number of clicks to start a task.
It looks nice enough, does the job, but the flow for starting/stopping managing timers felt much heavier than Id like. Ended up going with Harvest & their simple desktop app was a lot more like what I was looking for.

This is almost perfect for what I need! My job involves tons of interruptions, and at the end of the day, I have to sit and think about where the time has gone. It lets me create two levels of organization (overall project, and project objective, for instance) and then track “sessions” under that. A couple things would make this even better, in my humble opinion: 1) When editing a session, it would be nice to be able to edit either the DURATION _OR_ the END TIME; would be great to see the end time and change it to current time, for instance, rather than trying to figure out how many minutes to add to the start time to get the resulting end time I was looking for. 2) There doesn’t seem to be a way to move a task… I started a task under “walk-ups” for instance, but that work ended up belonging to another project/subproject. After finishing the work and stopping my timer, the only way to move it is to manually add a session in the right place and delete the one that I created with the timers. 3) In consideration of #2 above, it would be nice to allow you to just start a timer, and then give it a name and put in wherever it belongs once you’re done with the task. It’s a little annoying to go find the place to drop the next task before you start… interruptions don’t always lend themselves to getting organized first. :) GREAT product, well worth the $6!
UPDATE: Even though the app’s preferences nicely allow you to relocate the database, it still generates a conflict if in Dropbox and installed on two computers. The only way to avoid it would be religiously remembering to shut down the app on each computer before switching. I hadn’t heard of HR Task Timer in the reviews of productivity software, time trackers, etc. This is actually a very easy to use menu bar time tracker, the place where it should really be after all. It would be AMAZING for an iOS app to sync data with. The preferences very easily gave me the ability to move the App Data to Dropbox so I’m planning to be able to sync both computers at home and at work. Very promising, worth the $6 but I would pay $30 if it revolutionized my consultant billing!
